AUC Africa Science and Technology Advisory Group (AfSTAG) on Disaster Risk Resuction (DRR) Participates in the 4th Africa Multi-Hazard Early Warning and Action System (AMHEWAS) Coordination and Co-Production Meeting

AUC The Africa Science and Technology Advisory Group (AfSTAG) on Disaster Risk Resuction (DRR) was among the key stakeholders that participated in the 4th Africa Multi-Hazard Early Warning and Action System (AMHEWAS) Coordination and Co-Production Meeting, held from 20–22 April 2026 at the Akwa Palace Hotel in Douala, Cameroon.

The meeting was convened by the African Union Commission (AUC), in collaboration with Regional Economic Communities (RECs)—including IGAD-ICPAC, UMA, ECOWAS, ECCAS, and EACS—as well as Member States and strategic technical partners. Participating partners included the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR), the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), the CIMA Research Foundation, and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC).

The primary objective of the meeting was to assess implementation progress and enhance coordination around the AMHEWAS programme approach. Key areas of focus included:

  • Aligning policy and governance frameworks;
  • Strengthening interoperability among Situation Rooms;
  • Presenting new products and services;
  • Sharing country-level practical experiences on integrating innovations and operational tools into national and regional early warning systems, anticipatory action frameworks, and meteorological products; and
  • Deriving lessons learned to further strengthen AMHEWAS implementation.

The meeting concluded with the formulation of priority actions for the 2026–2027 period. These priorities will inform continental, regional, and Member State implementation roadmaps and guide future integration efforts.
